UMCAS AGM & Reunion Dinner 2008 - 17 July

Date: Thursday, 17 July 2008

Time: 7.00pm (registration and drinks) to be seated by 7.30pm

Venue: The Dining Hall, Ormond College, 49 College Crescent, Parkville (map)

Cost: $65.00 per person (includes drinks, appetisers and a two-course dinner)

This is a once-a-year event which follows the Alumni AGM. It is the highlight of the UMCAS calendar and last year proved a wonderful opportunity for alumni to reconnect. The dinner is open to all commerce graduates and partners/friends/colleagues of commerce graduates and of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. If you would like to get a group of friends or fellow alumni together and book a table, please just let us know on your RSVP form.

Peter Yates will be the guest speaker at this year's reunion dinner, talking on the topic "Is this the end of private equity in Australia?" and there will also be a feature musical performance by After 5 Artists to open the event and make it an evening to remember.

UMAA (University of Melbourne Actuarial Alumni) Launch - 24 July

Date: Thursday, 24 July 2008

Time: 5.30pm - 7.30pm (speaker to start at 6.00pm, refreshments served from 6.30pm)

Venue: Deloitte, 180 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new alumni group, UMAA, which is open to all alumni who studied or took a subject in Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne.

Professor David Dickson, Head of the Centre for Actuarial Studies, will give a short presentation on the evening, and it will be an opportunity for alumni to meet each other and find out what is happening both in the industry and at the University.

Inaugural Lecture by Professor Graham Sewell (Dept. of Management & Marketing) - 29 July

Date: Tuesday, 29 July 2008

Time: 6.00pm with refreshments to follow at 7.00pm

Venue: Theatre 1, ICT Building

Topic: ‘Big Brother versus a Fair Go: Is Workplace Surveillance Coercive or Does It Guarantee Our Rights at Work?’

This lecture traces the intellectual origins of the opposing views that surveillance is a guarantor of fairness in the workplace or that it reinforces the unfairness at the heart of the employment relationship, and shows that, if taken in isolation, neither provides a satisfactory account of what managers do and why they do it. Only by considering them together can we begin to understand the experience of being subjected to workplace surveillance.

Graham Sewell graduated from the University of Wales Institute of Science & Technology (now Cardiff University) with an honours degree in urban planning. He received his PhD in 1994, through an Economic & Social Research council scholarship from Cardiff University, the University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Santa Cruz. Graham joined the University of Melbourne in 1997. His research interests are wide ranging, however, he is best known for his work on the disciplinary effects of workplace surveillance. His work has appeared in premier journals and he is on the editorial board of Human Relations, Organization, and Management Communication Quarterly, and has just been appointed as a senior editor to Organization Studies.

Young Alumni Event @ BDO Kendalls, 16 April 2008

The first Young Alumni event of 2008 was sponsored by BDO Kendalls and hosted in their city offices on the 30th floor of the Rialto North Tower on Wednesday, 16 April. The stunning views provided the backdrop for our guest speaker Chris Brant, CFO of Transurban to tell us a bit about his unusual business and the challenges facing it. It was wonderful to meet so many of our alumni in person and we look forward to seeing even more of you at the next Young Alumni events coming up later in the year (details to be announced shortly). Also, if you were at this event, we'd love to hear your feedback.

Lifelong Learning Breakfast, Brisbane

On Friday, 14 March a Lifelong Learning Breakfast was held in collaboration with Melbourne Business School at the Brisbane Polo club. It was the first event of its kind for Brisbane alumni and was a great success.

Newly appointed Knowledge Transfer Fellow Associate Professor John Armstrong gave an entertaining and thought-provoking presentation around the marketing of intangibles and how philosophy fits into business.

The recently launched Melbourne Model operates around three key pillars: research, teaching and learning, and knowledge transfer. Through knowledge transfer, we are increasing participation with the community and our alumni.

It was wonderful to meet some of our alumni in Brisbane and we hope to establish an alumni group to meet for similar events in the future. If you are interested, please contact the Advancement Office at 03 8344 2603.
