Editorial Guidelines

1. Rationale
The purpose of this document is to provide editorial guidelines applying to the approval of content proposed for publication in The Echo.

 

2. Scope
These guidelines relate to the publication of content within The Echo.

 

3. Definitions

3.1 The Echo is a newspaper for students and staff within the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the University of Melbourne.
3.2 Content refers to all articles, submissions, photographs and other material that appears in The Echo.
3.3 Faculty refers to the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the University of Melbourne.
3.4 Students refers to all undergraduate and graduate students studying within the Faculty of Economics and Commerce.
3.5 The Editor is the person occupying the position of Programs and Publications Coordinator within the Faculty of Economics and Commerce.
3.6 The Editorial Committee is defined as the group of staff and student representatives from within the Faculty of Economics and Commerce who are members of the Editorial Committee.

4. Editorial Responsibility

4.1 The Editor holds primary responsibility for ensuring that editorial content is consistent with the editorial guidelines established in this document.
4.2 The Editor approach staff or students and invite contributions to The Echo.
4.3 Authorisation of editorial content is the responsibility of the Editor. Additional authorisation can be provided by the person occupying the position of the Director, Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU).
4.4 The Editor carries the main responsibility for proofreading the paper. The Editor should also undertake to nominate a minimum of one other person to proofread the final draft.

5. Editorial Content

5.1 The content of The Echo has the following purposes:

5.1.1 To provide a forum for student engagement with both academic and professional staff, as well as with other students, and to act as a vehicle for the promotion of the academic and social community.
5.1.2 To act as a marketing tool for the Teaching and Learning Unit and the Faculty.
5.1.3 To reflect on the achievements, initiatives and activities of both students and staff by reporting on Faculty news and events.
5.1.4 To provide timely administrative information to students.
5.1.6 To provide Faculty student clubs and societies with a forum for the promotion, reporting and celebration of events.
5.1.7 To inform or entertain, but must not breach defamation legislation and wider University guidelines.

5.2 Submission items must not:

5.2.1 Refer to alcohol.
5.2.3 Discriminate against anyone on the basis of gender, age, race, political or religious beliefs.
5.2.3 Render The Echo vulnerable to legal action.

5.3 In addition to adhering to the editorial guidelines outlined above, the Editor also reserves the right to edit submission items for the purposes of:

5.3.1 Correcting errors of fact.
5.3.2 Correcting errors of grammar and punctuation.
5.3.3 Other editorial requirements such as space limit.

5.4 Disclaimer

5.4.1 The following disclaimer will be published in each edition of The Echo:

The Echo is a newspaper for all students in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, published by the Teaching and Learning Unit. All information in The Echo is provided in good faith and is derived from sources believed to be accurate and current as at the date of publication. Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily endorsed or approved by the Faculty or the University of Melbourne.

 

6. Editorial Committee

6.1 Composition

6.1.1 Staff representatives should be from, but not limited to, the Teaching and Learning Unit, the Commerce Student Centre and the Melbourne Graduate School of Management.
6.1.2 Student representatives should be students from a range of years, including members of the Faculty clubs and societies.

6.2 Meetings will take place four times a year, approximately three weeks prior to the date of publication.
