Our Mission
Since 1924 our Faculty has been committed to the economic and social well being of Australia and the Asia-pacific region. The discovery and dissemination of knowledge are central to our mission. Through teaching and learning, research and community engagement the Faculty creates opportunities for its students and staff to achieve their personal goals, to be responsible global citizens and to be leaders in industry and government.
The Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the University of Melbourne aims to be the leader in the Asia-Pacific region in education and research in the disciplines of the faculty and in the transfer of knowledge in the public and private sectors. Our leadership will be demonstrated by:
- a ranking in the top 50 business schools worldwide;
- the top ranking in business education nationally;

Education
- The Faculty will provide the highest quality undergraduate, graduate professional and research higher degree training to the brightest students in Australia and internationally.
- Our graduates will have a depth of knowledge of the disciplines of business and economics and an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of problem solving. They will be well prepared for employment and/or further study.
- Our teaching program will ensure that students will embed global and cultural perspectives in their understanding of economic and social issues.
- The Faculty will provide a stimulating, challenging and distinctive learning experience to talented students, irrespective of their financial circumstances, built on strong pedagogy, experiential learning opportunities and inspired by exceptional scholars.
Research
- The Faculty will conduct and disseminate research of international standing in the disciplines of accounting, actuarial studies, economics, econometrics, finance, human resource management, business information systems, international business, operations management, strategy, organizational behaviour and marketing.
- The Faculty will be the leading Faculty in the Asia-Pacific region in the provision of research higher degree training.
- Students will be exposed to research methodologies and projects supported by the latest technology, data and leading researchers.
Transfer of knowledge
- Leadership via two-way knowledge transfer between the Faculty and the public and private sectors is a core principle underpinning the Faculty’s teaching and research activities.
- The Faculty will maintain and further develop close and mutually beneficial relationships with the public and private sectors both nationally and internationally.
- Our academic staff, through leadership in their disciplines, will contribute to and stimulate debate on society’s critical issues.
