Faculty of Economics and Commerce

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bachelor of Commerce have majors?

The Bachelor of Commerce is a very flexible degree within which you have a wide range of choices in subject selection. This flexibility is in response to the demand from employers for students with a broad education.

Those students expecting to complete their degree from mid 2008 and beyond may now opt to have their area(s) of study formally acknowledged on their transcript and testamur by completing a commerce major. Further details regarding majors including specific requirements for completing a major(s) and applying for a major(s) can be found at the webpage below.

Can I enrol in subjects without the prerequisites?

You cannot enrol in subjects without the stated prerequisites unless you have written approval from the subject coordinator to do so. If you obtain such approval you should lodge this with the Commerce Student Centre or take it with you to a subject change session. You should be aware that you are not advised to enrol in subjects without completing the prerequisites and if you obtain approval to do so and fail it will not be grounds for special consideration.

How do I change my subjects?

Both single and double degree Bachelor of Commerce students can change subjects online via the Admin tab on the Student Portal. This service is available usually the two weeks before semester starts and during the first week of semester. It is possible to delete subjects during this time without the subject appearing on your academic record. Subject withdrawal deadlines are listed on the 'Studies' tab in the Student Portal . Students are advised that all prerequisite requirements must be met when enrolling in a subject and if applicable, students are responsible for withdrawing from any subjects for which the prerequisite subject was failed in the prior semester. For further information, please refer to the Subject Selection webpage.

When can I start second year/third year subjects?

To enrol in a level-2 subject (second year) you must have completed the stated prerequisites together with 75 level-1 points (these do not all have to be Commerce points). To enrol in a level-3 subject (third year) you must have completed the stated prerequisites together with 175 level-1 and level-2 points (these do not all have to be Commerce points). You will not be permitted to enrol in higher-level subjects until you have completed both the specific subject prerequisites and the points requirements. Students should refer to the Course and Subject Handbook for course requirements.

What if I fail a subject?

You are allowed to repeat a non-compulsory subject once and any of the five compulsory subjects twice. Repeated failure in a number of subjects will lead the Faculty to recommend you to appear before the Student Progress Committee which could result in termination from the course. If you find yourself failing subjects, you should take action to identify reasons why. These could include poor study techniques or studying the wrong discipline area. You may wish to meet with a course adviser to discuss your progress in your course and to obtain advice on how you can get 'back on track'. Course advisers can help you to choose more appropriate subjects or direct you to services such as the Teaching and Learning Unit.

Further information on services available to assist you with your studies and the consequences of subject failure can be found on the 'What happens if I fail a subject?' web page.

Can I overload?

It may be possible for high achieving students to overload to a maximum of 62.5 points per semester.

An overload is approved on a semester-by-semester basis and students cannot apply to overload until their most recent semester's results are available.

Students will not be permitted to exceed a total of 300 points (24 subjects) in the single Bachelor of Commerce or 500 points in a Bachelor of Commerce double degree. Permission to overload in any semester will only be granted if the Faculty believes that the student has the ability to pass all the subjects in the overloaded course, and that the overload will not result in a substantially diminished performance in the course.

Students wishing to overload should refer to the guidelines and procedures outlined on the Overloading web page.

Can I change courses?

You may apply to transfer courses after two semesters of study. To change courses at the end of the year you need to apply online for an internal transfer. The online internal transfer system normally opens in October and closes at the start of December. You will be required to meet the course prerequisites and selection will be based upon the results you have achieved to date in your studies. To change courses at the start of second semester you need to apply directly to the relevant Faculty. Generally there are only full fee places available mid year. For further information, go to the 'Admin' tab in the Student Portal
