Allocation of Commerce tutorials
The tutorial system for most subjects in commerce is called Alloc8. Alloc8 provisionally allocates students to both lectures and tutorials for Commerce subjects.
All students enrolled in an undergraduate Commerce subject (including postgraduate course students) must use Alloc8 to determine subject lecture and tutorial times:
What commerce subjects are on Alloc8?
All current semester (including summer) and year-long lectures and tutorials for undergraduate Commerce subjects will be scheduled by Alloc8. Business Law classes taught by the Faculty of Law will also be scheduled by Alloc8.
Postgraduate students please note only some subjects are scheduled by Alloc8. Postgraduate students should refer to the information below on "How do I access my timetable for subjects not on Alloc8?"
How does it work and when does it open?
Alloc8 does not require you to lodge preferences, but allocates classes based on a best fit model taking into consideration students' lectures and available tutorials. Alloc8 will provide you with a clash-free timetable (unless this is impossible) that you can then amend if there are available alternatives.
You will be able to view your own timetable for Semester 2 from Wednesday 16 July 2008. Any computer with Internet access can be used to do this; you do not have to be on campus. A list of Commerce computer laboratories can be found at http://www.ecom.unimelb.edu.au/services/computing/facilities.html.
Once you have viewed your timetable you can make changes to it as of Thursday 17 July 2008 by following the instructions given. Please note you will only be able to change your allocated time if there are available alternatives.
How do I access my timetable for subjects not on Alloc8?
Timetable and venue information for all University lectures can be found via the Student Portal. If you have enrolled in subjects offered by faculties not on Alloc8, you should contact the relevant Faculty to sign up for classes.
What if I change my subjects after Alloc8 has opened?
All the subjects in which you are enrolled on Tuesday 15 July will appear on your timetable from Wednesday 16 July (provided they are included on Alloc8). If you change your subjects after this date you will have to go back into Alloc8 and check your updated timetable (Alloc8 will be updated with your subjects every hour or so). If you wish to change your subjects you may do so online (see Subject Selection).
When does Alloc8 close?
Alloc8 closes at 3.30pm sharp on Friday 8 August 2008.
What do I do if I have problems with my timetable?
If you are unable to resolve your timetable and wish to be listed in a different tutorial or lecture stream than those allocated to you through Alloc8, you must seek assistance from the Commerce Student Centre. Students are encouraged to contact the Commerce Student Centre via email (commerce-courseadvice@unimelb.edu.au) in the first instance.
Assistance may be provided for:
- timetable clash with another University of Melbourne subject
- long-distance travel work commitments directly related to study
- religious reasons
- if you are studying part-time medical reasons including a disability (ie. no audio equipment in your allocated room)
- other serious issues (to be decided by the Student Adviser/Commerce Student Centre Team Leader).
Note: documentation may be required in support of any of the above reasons.
Assistance will NOT be provided in the following cases:
- a ‘gap’ in your timetable
- requiring a day off
- work not directly related to study
- a preference to be in the same tutorial/lecture/seminar stream as a friend
- classes too early in the day
Please note: For timetabling and Alloc8 enquiries involving subjects taught outside of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, please contact the relavent Student Centre, Department or School (PDF, 39kb).
