Overloading
Overloading in a semester means enrolling in more than the normal full-time load of 50 points (or four subjects). If you wish to take a language subject as part of your degree you will be permitted to enrol in 56.25 points in a semester. The following guidelines apply to the granting of permission to overload:
- First year students will not be permitted to overload under any circumstances.
- Students who have failed two or more subjects in two successive semesters will not be given permission to overload in the following two semesters of study.
- A maximum load of up to 62.5 points in semesters 1 and 2 is permitted. Students undertaking a language in an overloaded semester will be permitted to enrol in up to 68.75 points.
- Students who have achieved an average of at least 70% in the previous semester (in which they were enrolled in at least 50 points) may be permitted to overload in the subsequent semester.
- Final year students will normally be permitted to overload to complete their degree in their final semester if (a) they have passed all subjects in their penultimate semester (in which they were enrolled in at least 50 points) or (b) they have failed one subject in their penultimate semester and no other fails have been recorded throughout their degree.
Students will not be permitted to exceed a total of 300 points (24 subjects) in the single BCom or 500 points in a double BCom course. Permission to overload in any semester will only be granted if the Faculty believes that the student has the ability to pass all the subjects in the overloaded course, and that the overload will not result in a substantially diminished performance in the course.
If you meet these guidelines and wish to overload in Semester 1, 2008 you should apply via your University email account by following the instructions below:
SEND YOUR OVERLOAD EMAIL REQUEST AFTER THE RELEASE OF RESULTS FOR SEMESTER 1:
- Email: commerce-courseadvice@unimelb.edu.au
- Write in the subject field: OVERLOADING Semester 2, 2008
- In the main body of the email: Your full name as it appears on your enrolment and student number.
Your enrolment will then be checked by a course adviser. If your overload has been approved, you will be notified via email and you will be able to enrol in up to 62.5 points through the Subject Selection System on the Student Portal. Students should refer to the Subject Selection page for further details.
Please note: Students wishing to overload may only apply to do so during the online subject selection periods that occur after the release of results.
